We end a year in which we have delivered positive results, in the middle of an ongoing pandemic, with an extremely strong momentum in business development, acquisitions and divestments. All Swedish and Norwegian destinations remained open throughout the winter season with more new guests visiting us. However, the absence of foreign guests has had an adverse effect on our earnings.
With Sweden and Norway's widest and largest alpine skiing offer for all levels, SkiStar is reaffirming its role as the leading holiday tour operator for Scandinavia this winter. As part of SkiStar's work to consolidate its position as the leading holiday tour operator for Scandinavia, the company is now taking a new approach to hotel development in the Scandinavian mountains. SkiStar will operate six lodges and hotels at the company's destinations. The investment is made possible by increasing the pace of real estate development as the company has today agreed with Peab.
On 2 May, the last two of SkiStar’s destinations, Åre in Sweden and Hemsedal in Norway, closed for the winter season, a season which was historic in many ways as the company succeeded in staying open all winter, offering a total of 150 days of skiing. The focus has been on the safety of all guests, employees and residents of the ski resorts, along with good snow conditions and good service.
The strong trend in Scandinavia of active mountain holidays all year round with family and friends is here to stay. To strengthen its position as the leading holiday tour operator for Scandinavia, SkiStar has decided to sell its shares as majority owner of the ski resort St. Johann in Tirol in Austria. The buyer is the Austrian family company Schultz Gruppe, which operates several ski resorts.
Half-Year Report September 2020-February 2021: High demand in Sweden and hopes for a good, long winter season in Scandinavia with ski resorts open. Continuing challenges in Norway with its strict entry and quarantine rules in response to the coronavirus, resulting in a loss of foreign guests, which in turn has a negative effect on earnings.
Pontus Frithiof and Nordrest will be setting up in northern Sweden for the first time, as the two restaurants open at SkiStar's new resort, SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället, in Sälen. The two restaurants will have different concepts and specialities, but they will offer something for everyone with a focus on sustainability – good and well-prepared food based on locally produced ingredients.
Interim Report: September 2020-November 2020: Comments from the CEO Stefan Sjöstrand: The coronavirus pandemic continued to affect our operations in the first quarter 2020/21, and the process of Covid-proofing our destinations continued throughout the autumn. SkiStar is introducing a range of precautionary measures to ensure the safety and security of our guests and employees.
SkiStar Hemsedal was first to announce that the resort will be opening for skiing on 11 December, together with SkiStar Trysil, and it's now also clear that SkiStar Åre, Sälen and Vemdalen will be opening during the week commencing 14 December (calendar week 51)*.
During the autumn, SkiStar has worked intensively in Norway and Sweden with destination companies, local and national actors such as the healthcare and emergency services as well as skiing industry organisations to help to protect guests and employees from Covid-19 during the forthcoming ski season. Based on standard industry guidelines, SkiStar is now implementing several safety measures.

Comments from the CEO Stefan Sjöstrand: March 2020 was the month that shook not only the world, but SkiStar too, as the spread of the new coronavirus left no-one unaffected. Announcements that our operations in both Norway and Austria had been forced to close were followed by Sweden’s Public Health Agency advising us to also close the Swedish resorts.
When it comes to snow, it’s hard to beat Norway and Sweden. SkiStar’s five Scandinavian ski resorts have seen great conditions so far this season, with Åre, Sälen and Vemdalen in Sweden and Trysil and Hemsedal in Norway currently enjoying snow depths of between 62 cm and 168 cm.
Easter is the ideal time to get away for a family ski holiday; in fact, it’s something of a tradition in Sweden and Norway. With longer, warmer days, glorious pink sunrises and sunsets and a more chilled-out vibe on the slopes, the Easter holidays are the perfect time to relax and spend time together in nature.
